Food Rules

I stumbled across a great little book last week that I just have to share with you! It’s called “Food Rules” by Michael Pollan.  If you have see the documentary “Food Inc“, you may recognize his name as a contributor.  It’s such a simple book, but it gives great insight into what we should eat.  I found it for only $10, and it’s even cheaper on Amazon!

“There are basically two important things you need to know about the links between diet and health, two facts that are not in dispute.” he says.

“Fact 1: Populations that eat a so-called Western diet– generally defined as a diet consisting of lots of processed foods and meat, lots of added fat and sugar, lots of refined grains, lots of everything except vegetables, fruits, and whole-grains– invariably suffer from high rates of so-called Western diseases: obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.”

“Fact 2: Populations eating a remarkably wide range of traditional diets don’t suffer from these chronic diseases.”

“There is actually a third, very hopeful fact that follows these two: People who get off the Western diet see dramatic improvements in their health. We have good research to suggest that the effects of the Western diet can be rolled back, and relatively quickly.”

The rest of the book lays out rules or personal policies about what to eat, what kind of food to eat, and how much to eat.  It is very easy to understand and simple to implement. For example: “Rule #11 Avoid foods you see advertised on television. Rule #19 If it came from a plant, eat it. If it was made in a plant, don’t. Rule #36 Don’t eat cereals that change the color of the milk. Rule #57 Don’t get your fuel from the same place your car does.”

I just love this book! It’s so practical and well written. It’s a great read, and would make a great gift!
