What Kind of Fuel Do You Use?

“If u simply count calories with no regard to WHAT your eating, it’s like filling up your car with Gatorade simply bc it’s the right amount!” – twitter

When a client comes to me wanting to lose weight, I typically have them start a food journal and count calories.  I am not a huge advocate of calorie counting. My purpose in having them do this is simply to see how they are over or under eating.  It helps you get used to a normal serving size, and how much you really should be eating in a normal day. BUT I also go over clean eating with them in order to show them that the quality of our calories matter even more than the quantity of our calories.

For example, in the old Weight Watchers program, a 100 calorie pack of cookies had the same point value as an apple.  Which is clearly the healthier choice? The apple of course.   But if it’s just about points, most people would choose the cookies, right? (I would!) Weight Watchers has since fixed this flaw in their point system.  The cookies still have a point value, while the apple is 0 points.  That makes way more sense.

If I told you that you needed to eat 1500 calories a day in order to lose 1-2 pounds a week, and you were really strict with this- ONLY eating exactly 1500 calories a day…BUT your 1500 calories came from processed foods, fast food, sodas,  and white sugars and flours (junk food)…do you think you would lose any weight?  Maybe at first, but definitely not for the long haul.

It just simply isn’t true that a calorie is a calorie.  Sure the simple equation of calories in, calories out is effective for weight loss, but the QUALITY of those calories is extremely important! You CAN lose weight simply by restricting your calories in, and expending calories out with exercise, but you will not be healthy (Skinny Fat), and more likely to gain the weight back.

In every case, simply Eating Clean will make drastic improvements in our health! Let’s kick out that junk, and stick with fresh, in-season fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats.  And don’t forget your (zero calorie) water!  Your body will thank you. 🙂
